Microsoft discontinued Windows Live OneCare in late 2008 and started offering Microsoft Security Essential later in 2009. Though Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner was still offered by Microsoft and now it’s officially replace by Microsoft Safety Scanner (MSS). Similar to scanners offered by other vendors in market MSS offers on-demand scanning to remove viruses, spywares and other malicious software.

Let’s look how to get it on your pc and then how to use it step by step:

Step 1: When you visit the website you see a Download Now button on top





Step 2: Once you click on it you get a pop-up asking which version of Windows you are using



Step 3: Once you click on either of the two options, you get a pop-up asking it to save it to your pc



Step 4: Now after you have downloaded it just double click on it to run and you will see this message. Accept the terms and then click on Next



Step 5: Click on next to see options available for scanning



Step 6: There will be 3 options, you can either do a quick scan, full scan or customized scan. Quick scan will scan for places that are likely to have a viruses or spywares whereas full scan looks into each and every file on your pc and customized scan allows you to scan particular drive or folders. We recommend going for a full scan as in our testing it came out quick scan can miss out on threats.



Once you select your desired type of scanning it will start scanning your pc and depending upon whether it detect threats or not it will show results



If threat is found then you will get this message, just check the remove potentially unwanted software box and click next



In case no threat is found you will see this message



On-demand scanners have both pros and cons. Unlike antivirus, antispyware programs that run in background it doesn’t consume memory and hence don’t slow down pc. But it also don’t provide real time protection against viruses, spywares, malwares which are likely to come while surfing web or connecting external storage. MSS can be useful if you don’t want your pc to get slowdown with antivirus programs.

Requirements for MSS are:


  • Operating System: Windows 7; Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows XP.
  • A PC with a CPU clock speed of 500 MHz or higher, and 256 MB RAM or higher.
  • VGA display of 800 × 600 or higher.
  • 200 MB of available hard disk space.

One major drawback of MSS is that it will expire in 10 days. Hence you have to download it again after every 10 days.
